I Started by Finding People
I began working as a skip tracer and social engineer in 1984.
This was long before social media, search engines and smartphones made personal information easy to find.
Finding someone required thought.
I searched addresses, telephone numbers, businesses, relatives, property information and the small details people revealed without realising their value.
I learned how separate pieces of information connect.
A telephone number could lead to an address.
A business could lead to a partner.
A relative could lead to a location.
One small detail could open the door to an entire life.
That work taught me how people are found.
It also taught me how privacy breaks.
I Reversed My Work
I eventually moved to the other side.
Instead of finding people, I began helping them become difficult to find.
Instead of connecting information, I began breaking the connections.
I worked with people who needed to disappear, protect a new location, separate themselves from a former life or prevent someone from finding them.
That experience led to my New York Times bestselling book How to Disappear.
Disappearing was never about running into the woods or deleting every account.
It was about understanding how identity, behaviour, family, business and location connect.
Today, those connections are even more powerful.
Social media, public records, mobile numbers, data services and artificial intelligence can connect a person’s private life to their real identity within minutes.

How I Stop Blackmail Threats
Blackmailers use private information to create fear.
They may possess photographs, videos, messages or details about an affair, dating profile, escort encounter or secret relationship.

Their goal is to force a payment before the victim can think clearly.

How I Identify Romance Scammers
Romance scammers build believable identities.
They may claim to be doctors, engineers, business owners, military officers or international contractors.
They may use stolen photographs, false documents and carefully prepared stories.
The relationship can continue for weeks or months before money is requested.
I search the identity the person presented.
I examine the name, photographs, telephone number, email address, social profiles, business claims, employment history and locations connected to the story.
I look for the details that do not connect.
My goal is to answer the question the client cannot answer alone:
Is this person real?
If the profile is fake, I help the client get rid of the romance scammer without giving the person another opportunity to manipulate them.
If the scammer threatens photographs, private conversations, a marriage or family, the romance scam has become blackmail.
I can then take over as the client and control the threat.
